I-435 Reconstruction in Kansas City
One of the Busiest Highways in Kansas
The largest project in KDOT's history was let to construction in August 2005 at an estimated $122 million. The project in Johnson County involves construction of a new interchange at I-435 and Antioch Road, widening 2.5 miles of I-435 from six to eight lanes between Metcalf Avenue and US-69 with auxiliary lanes between interchanges, partial reconstruction of the US-69/103rd Street interchange, and construction of noise walls.
Prior to construction, these freeway corridors and the surrounding interchanges operated beyond their designed capacity, causing significant motorist delays and congestion. The desired results: fewer delays, safer roads, and improved travel times.
More than 130,000 vehicles travel every day on I- 435 between US-69 and Metcalf Avenue; and more than 88,000 vehicles travel each day through the US-69 corridor in the area just north of I-435.
