If you are involved in a crash:

  • You are legally required to stop.
  • Check yourself and your passengers for potential injuries.
  • Call 911 if anyone is injured, the airbags were deployed or if any of the vehicles involved are not drivable.
  • If there are no injuries and vehicles are drivable, they should be moved to the side of the road with hazard lights on.
  • If vehicles are not drivable, turn on hazard lights and set out warning flares or reflective triangles, if available. Do not leave the scene of a crash but find a safe place to remain until emergency services arrive.
  • If you cannot get out of your vehicle safely, keep your seatbelt fastened, turn on hazard lights, and call 911.
  • If there are injuries to individuals involved in the crash, render aid but don’t move them unless there is a life-threatening hazard.
  • If a driver involved in the crash is intoxicated, has no insurance, or leaves the scene of the crash, notify law enforcement as soon as possible.

Non-Injury Crash: Information Exchange

If you are involved in a crash and either the police are not called or they are unable to come to the scene immediately, get the following information from the other driver and exchange the same information about yourself. Also, be sure to get the names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses.

  • Driver’s name
  • Driver's license number and state
  • Home address
  • Telephone number
  • Vehicle identification number
  • License plate number
  • Name of insurance company
  • Insurance policy number
  • Location of the crash (street names, intersections, etc.)

Know the Kansas Law

If you’re involved in a crash with no deaths or injuries and there is less than $1,000 total damage to the vehicles involved, it is not necessary to file a crash report with police. However, you are required to stop and exchange information with the other driver. If you crash into an unattended vehicle or other object, you are required to find the owner or leave your information on a note that explains what happened.

Motorists are required to carry proof of insurance. If you cannot produce a current proof of insurance card, you may be issued a citation at the scene of the crash. Motorists are encouraged to carry their vehicle registration papers in the glove box.
