Project Update
K-96 Improvements aim to upgrade the K-96 corridor between I-135 and I-35 in Wichita with planned interchange enhancements , pavement replacement and expansion of K-96 by adding a fourth lane in each direction. A four-lane expansion is planned for 9.5 miles of K-96 starting on the west at I-135, to 21st Street on the southeast. KDOT recently completed a study including preliminary design and environmental review of the planned improvements. Thank you to everyone who has engaged in the process.
K-96 Improvements are currently in the IKE Development Pipeline and are not yet funded for construction. The planned improvements will be delivered as four different projects with construction timing depending upon the allocation of funding. This phased approach allows KDOT to deliver the improvements alongside other priorities across the state.
KDOT is currently exploring interim investments along K-96 to ease current congestion in key areas. More details are anticipated to be available near the end of 2025.
Project Location
K-96 Improvements will be delivered as four different projects with construction timing depending upon the allocation of funding. The graphic below outlines the four proposed projects for final design and construction.
- Blue Project – Extends from midway on K-96 between the Oliver and Woodlawn interchanges on the west to midway on K-96 between the Rock and Webb interchanges on the east; includes upgrades to the Woodlawn and Rock interchanges.
- Orange Project – Extends from the K-96 and I-135 interchange (near Hydraulic Avenue) on the west to midway on K-96 between the Oliver and Woodlawn interchanges on the east; will include planned upgrades to the I-135, Hillside, and Oliver interchanges.
- Red Project – Extends from midway on K-96 between the Rock and Webb interchanges on the west to midway on K-96 between the Webb and Greenwich interchanges on the southeast; includes upgrades to the Webb interchange.
- Yellow Project – Extends from midway on K-96 between the Webb and Greenwich interchanges on the northwest to north of the K-96/U.S. 54/400 interchange on the southeast. K-96 shifts from 6 lanes to 4 lanes at 21st Street, and pavement replacement only is from 21st Street to the Kellogg interchange; includes upgrades to the Greenwich and 21st Street interchanges.
