Project Description

The K-10/South Lawrence Trafficway (SLT) project is focused on improving safety and mobility for the SLT Corridor and the surrounding highway system, including alleviating strain on the City of Lawrence street network. KDOT selected a contractor and construction began in fall 2024.

Project Design and Improvements

U.S. 40/K-10/SLT will be widened from a two-lane to a four-lane median divided highway. The improvements are being constructed in two projects—the north and south projects.

SLT Project Area

  • North Project: I-70/K-10 interchange with Farmer’s Turnpike and improvements on K-10 to U.S. 40/6th Street. (Construction anticipated to begin fall 2026)
  • South Project: U.S. 40/K-10 from just north of U.S. 40/6th Street south and east to U.S. 59/Iowa Street with reconstructing Wakarusa Drive/27th Street interchange. (Currently under construction, see image below)

Additional improvements for the south project, currently under construction, include:

  • Improving the U.S. 59/Iowa Street and Clinton Parkway interchanges.
  • The improvements at the U.S. 59/Iowa Street interchange will consolidate the intersections on the south side of the interchange with folded diamond ramps. More ramp lane storage and a pedestrian/bike bridge over U.S. 59/Iowa Street will also be constructed. (See image below: U.S. 59/Iowa St. Interchange Improvements)
  • The Clinton Parkway interchange design includes adding two roundabouts at the EB and WB ramps to and from Clinton Parkway. (See image below: Clinton Parkway Interchange Improvements)
  • Maintaining the Bob Billings Parkway and U.S. 40/6th Street interchanges.
  • Adding a new interchange at Wakarusa Drive. The existing intersection will be eliminated and access to Wakarusa Drive and 27th Street will be through a grade-separated interchange. U.S. 40/K-10 will go over Wakarusa Drive and 27th Street when construction is completed. Traffic along U.S 40/K-10/SLT will no longer be signal controlled. Access to and from the local streets will be on ramps. (See image below: U.S. 40/ K-10/Wakarusa Dr./27th St. Improvements)
