KDOT’s Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) launches four annual campaigns in partnership with local and state agencies to increase seat belt use and enforce impaired and distracted driving laws.  The campaigns are timed around the holidays of Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. For questions about participation in STEP please reach out to your Law Enforcement Liaisons.

  • Taking Down DUI December 26- January 2
  • Click It or Ticket May 17 - June 1
  • Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over (formerly You Drink, You Drive, You Lose) August 23 - September 7

FY2026 Resources for Model 1 Agencies 

Please submit all activity reports online using the link below. These activity reports have changed slightly since FY25 to capture the most relevant traffic safety enforcement data. Please submit your agency’s data within 30 days of completing the enforcement.

Goals 

  • Educate community about traffic safety efforts
  • Average two public contacts per hour worked
Benefits for Agency
  • Increase traffic safety enforcement capabilities through overtime reimbursement
  • Qualify for traffic safety equipment purchases based on time worked 
Requirements
  • Participate in three campaigns
  • Enforcement must be performed on overtime
  • Federal funds cannot be used to replace regular operating expenses
  • Participating officers are exempt from normal duty requirements
  • Meet the contacts per hour goal
Tips for Success
  • Engage local media
  • Use provided news release template
  • Use the provided social media to engage and educate about the event
  • Don’t forget to post the outcomes after the event (how many stops, tickets, etc.)
