The goal of the HRRR subprogram is to reduce lane departure crashes on any rural major collector, rural minor collector, or rural local road with significant safety risks. Treatments may by systemic and include improving the clear zone, installing or improving pavement marking and/or delineation, installing or improving signing, and rumble strips. 

The Corridor subprogram aims to address multiple emphasis areas, including roadway departure and speeding related crashes on the state and local systems.  

Planning and Data

The goal of Planning and Data subprogram is to conduct studies, collect data, or improve processes to increase the effectiveness of safety projects. This subprogram has been used to produce the federally required Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), now known as the Drive To Zero (DTZ) Plan, and to administer its implementation activities. This subprogram primarily supports planning and data collection activities for the Kansas Department of Transportation; however, the Traffic Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP) is available for local public agencies.

Traffic Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP)

The Traffic Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP) provides local public agencies with engineering assistance to address traffic safety and operational issues. This program helps cities and counties by funding traffic studies to improve the safety of roadways in the state. The intended outcome of the TEAP program is to prepare preliminary engineering information that advances infrastructure implementation. 

To apply for TEAP, local agencies must complete an application form, which includes details such as the city, county, KDOT district, problem description, and assistance requested. The completed form should be submitted to the Kansas Department of Transportation's Bureau of Local Projects, either electronically or by mail.

Traffic Engineering Assistance Program Application Form

The goal of the Special Projects subprogram is to fund new-to-Kansas demonstration and pilot safety improvements to support infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects that do not fall neatly into other categories. For example, this subprogram was used to fund the Vulnerable Road User Safety Assessment.
