Best Management Practices (BMPs)

The water quality benefits of our Best Management Practices (BMPs), which are described in the SWMP and annual report, are supported by research and/or common sense approaches to reducing stormwater pollution within the framework of the Department’s organization and mission. 

BMPs focus on the following:

  • Public Involvement/ Public Education (includes training for KDOT employees)
  • Illicit Discharge Detections and Elimination
  • Stormwater outfall inventory for MS4 regulated area Construction Site Stormwater Runoff Controls
  • KDOT Supplemental Specification (Division 900: contains temporary sediment and erosion controls)
  • Post Construction Stormwater Management
  • KDOT reviews each project in a accordance with the Drainage Manual.
  • Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping

Examples of BMPs include

  • Roadside swales
  • Structural controls
  • Schedules
  • Prohibitions
  • Maintenance procedures to prevent or reduce the discharge of pollutants
  • Operating procedures
  • Treatment requirements
  • Practices to control facility site runoff, spillage or leaks, sludge or waste disposal
