KDOT uses Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of travel across Kansas. ITS uses traffic sensors, dynamic message signs, closed-circuit cameras, and other technology to provide real-time traveler information. These systems support incident response, enhance mobility, and provide timely updates on traffic and road conditions, work zones, weather hazards, and other roadway events. KDOT’s ITS network empowers drivers to make informed decisions and supports a more connected and responsive statewide transportation system. ITS operations are coordinated through two Traffic Management Centers (TMC), KC Scout and WICHway. Both TMC’s coordinate with Emergency Responders throughout the state and offer Traffic Incident Management (TIM) training to promote quicker crash clearance and to improve safety.
