Education and Outreach Programs in Kansas Aviation

The Kansas Department of Transportation's (KDOT) Division of Aviation actively engages in educational and outreach programs to promote aviation awareness and foster a new generation of aviation professionals. Key initiatives include:

1. Science, Technology, & Aviation Research Program (STAR): Launched in early 2016, STAR is a nationally recognized program that unites aviation stakeholders, educators, students, and the Kansas community to enhance STEM education and highlight industry opportunities. Since its inception, STAR has involved over 2,300 students across 30 communities, addressing current and future industry challenges.

2. Fly Kansas Air Tour: Presented by the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education and KDOT, this annual event raises awareness about the significance of community airports and promotes STEM and aviation education among youth. Each year, approximately 1,200 students visit local airports, interact with pilots, and tour various aircraft. The tour has been a continuous effort since its revival in 2017, with the inaugural event dating back to 1928.

3. Aviation Day at the Capitol: This event showcases the positive impacts of aviation and the aerospace industry in Kansas. It provides a platform for aviation stakeholders and legislators to network and discuss contributions to the state's economy. The fifth annual Aviation Day is scheduled for March 7, 2019, at the State Capitol rotunda, with over 42 organizations expected to participate.

Training & Workshop Webinars 

1. Winter Weather Flying Webinar Series

• Dates: January and February 2025

• Details: Over 60 pilots participated in webinars focused on winter weather flying, supported by the Wichita FAASTeam. The sessions contributed to FAA WINGS safety credits.

University and Flight School Partnerships
