I-235, at the interchange of I-235 and K-96, NEW. Survey for pavement replacement for ramps at the interchange of I-235 and K-96 for design development. This field survey effort is anticipated to begin on April 6 and is estimated to be completed by the end of July 2026.
East Kellogg Expansion Project; project includes reconstruction of U.S. 54 to a six-lane corridor, improvements to K-96, 26 bridge replacements, 32 new retaining walls, and construction of two-lane frontage roads to maintain access to local businesses. Work began March 23 and is anticipated to continue through the duration of the multi-phase project.
Bridge redecking project 101st street over I-135; project includes removing and replacing sections of the bridge deck using heavy equipment and concrete placement. For the duration of the project, the 101st Street bridge over I-135 will be closed to traffic. During phases of work, I-135 at 101st Street will be reduced to intermittent lane closures. Please see “Short-Term Closures” for applicable closure information. Work is anticipated to continue through September 2026.
I-135/U.S. 54 interchange bridge construction project. The project includes bridge replacement and deck rehabilitation. A new ramp from southbound I-135 to eastbound U.S. 54 is being constructed in conjunction with the northbound I-135 to U.S. 54 bridge redecking. For the duration of the project, inside lanes on I-135 (Lincoln Street to Douglas Avenue) and U.S. 54 (Hillside to Topeka) will be closed to traffic. The ramp from northbound I-135 to westbound U.S. 54 will be closed beginning Jan. 5, 2026. Work is anticipated to continue through September 2027.
Bridge and interchange improvement work at the I-135/K-96 interchange; project includes bridge deck pours, permanent striping, and high mast lighting footing installation. Please see “Short-Term Closures” for applicable daily and nightly closure information. This work is part of the North Junction Gold Project Phase 2B.
K-15 bridge replacement project; work includes bridge reconstruction and improvements over the Wichita Drainage Canal. For the duration of the project, the southbound K-15 bridge over the Wichita Drainage Canal will be closed to traffic. Exit 3A, the southbound I-135 ramp to K-15, will also be closed. A detour will direct drivers south on I-135 to the S. Hydraulic Avenue exit, then east on E. MacArthur Road and south on Southeast Boulevard to rejoin K-15. Work will be scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is anticipated to be completed in December 2026.
Gold Project Phase 2B: North Junction to I‑135/K‑96 Interchange on I‑135 and K‑96. Construction began Feb. 6, 2023. This phase includes a direct link for eastbound K‑96 from northbound I‑235 and southbound I‑135, new westbound K‑96 ramps to I‑135 and other new ramps at the K‑96/I‑135 interchange. A long‑term 11‑ft. width restriction on the two lanes of southbound I‑135, south of the I‑235/K‑254 overpass, is in effect along with a 50‑mph work‑zone speed limit, and the southbound I‑135 exit to eastbound K‑96 also has an 11‑ft. width restriction that began March 8, 2023, and remains in place.
