The Highway Safety Improvement Program – Highway Grade Crossing is a federal aid initiative that funds the installation of protective devices and hazard mitigation at highway-railway crossings on public roads. 

Eligible Entities 

  • All public at-grade railroad crossings, based on a priority formula.

Eligible Uses 

  • Installation of protective devices.
  • Hazard elimination common improvements include flashing lights with gates and constant warning time detection circuitry.

Funding 

  • Federal aid covers up to 100% of the project cost.
