The Bureau of Traffic Engineering is divided into two main sections: Traffic Engineering and Signing. The Bureau plays an important role within KDOT, focusing on reducing fatal and injury crashes.  

Traffic Engineering Responsibilities

  • Designing and developing intersection improvements, traffic signals, lighting, and pavement marking plans.
  • Conducting traffic studies to recommend safety improvements. 
  • Managing federal and state aid funds for cities. 

Signing Group Responsibilities

  • Designing and reviewing plans for permanent signs on the state highway system. 
  • Managing federal and state aid funds to maintain compliance with signing guidelines. 
  • Developing and reviewing traffic control plans for work zones on the state highway system.
