Multiple year project on U.S. 77 in Cowley County to begin
The Kansas Department of Transportation is set to begin an approximately $67.8 million pavement replacement project on nearly 9 miles of U.S. 77 between Arkansas City and the Walnut River bridge on the south side of Winfield in Cowley County on or around Aug. 14.
The project includes highway preservation, a new highway alignment on the south side of Strother Field, re-decking of the southbound bridge over the BNSF railroad and intersection work at 222nd Road, including drainage improvements.
The initial phase of the project for the 2026 construction season includes widening and resurfacing of the southbound lanes. Traffic through the work zone will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with a width restriction of 10 feet, 6 inches, and a length restriction of 100 feet.
Further improvements are set to take place in the 2027, 2028 and 2029 construction seasons, with substantial completion intended by the end of spring 2029, conditions permitting.
Pearson Construction LLC, of Wichita, is the primary contractor for the project.
