U.S. 160 reopens after emergency culvert repair

Post Date:03/31/2026 1:12 PM

A 38-mile mile stretch of U.S. 160 in Montgomery and Elk counties, which was closed to through traffic on March 25 for the emergency repair of a box culvert bridge, reopened on Tuesday, March 31, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The box culvert is a mile east of K-99 and extends under U.S. 160. Part of the culvert was made from wood, and that was damaged in a grass fire. The project limited traffic on U.S. 160 from U.S. 75 west of Independence to K-99 at Moline, and no through traffic was allowed in the work zone.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit kandrive.gov or call 511. For updates on construction projects in southeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/projects/southeast-kansas-projects.
