U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) over Johnson Drive bridge project to start Monday
A Kansas Department of Transportation bridge project will begin on U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) over Johnson Drive on Monday, March 30, in Johnson County, conditions permitting.
This project includes rehabilitation of the U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) bridge over Johnson Drive, grading and paving on U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue), removal of the southbound U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) to Metcalf Lane exit ramp and regrading. In addition to these major work items, the project also includes lighting and guardrail installation, drainage adjustments and median reconstruction.
Work is permitted Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Traffic will be controlled using lane and ramp closures, changeable message boards, signs, traffic cones, concrete safety barriers and temporary pavement marking. Message boards have been placed in the area to alert motorists of upcoming closures.
Project work is scheduled in phases as follows:
- Phase one: median removal and reconstruction; northbound and southbound U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) inside lanes will be closed;
- Phase two: northbound U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) over Johnson Drive bridge mill and overlay and auxiliary lane construction; northbound and southbound traffic will be head-to-head single lanes in each direction; Martway Street and West 58th Street access will be closed at U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue);
- Phase three: center lanes mill and overlay; northbound and southbound inside lanes will be closed;
- Phase four: southbound U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) bridge mill and overlay; removal of U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) to Metcalf Lane exit ramp; curb and approach slab construction and guardrail installation; northbound and southbound traffic will be head-to-head single lanes in each direction; Johnson Drive to U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue) entrance ramp will be closed; northbound and southbound traffic will be head-to-head single lanes in each direction; northbound Metcalf Lane, from Johnson Drive to the Shawnee Mission North High School entrance, will be closed during curb construction work.
Comanche Construction, Inc., of Olathe, is the contractor for the $2.5 million project, expected to be completed in December 2026.
