UPDATED Jan. 22, 2026 – The temporary closure on south Topeka Boulevard that was planned for tomorrow, Jan. 23, has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, conditions permitting. The closure on Monday, Jan. 26, is still scheduled, but dependent on weather and road conditions.

Original release below.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has scheduled three daytime closures to occur on a portion of south Topeka Boulevard for work on the I-70 Polk-Quincy Viaduct project in Topeka. The temporary closures will be in place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following days:
     • Thursday, Jan. 22
     • Friday, Jan. 23, and
     • Monday, Jan. 26

During each closure, the single northbound lane of Topeka Boulevard between 1st and 3rd streets will be fully closed to traffic while bridge girders are placed on the new westbound viaduct structure.

To access westbound I-70 during the closures, motorists can follow the marked detour west on 6th Avenue and north on MacVicar Avenue. Drivers can also go north on Kansas Avenue, west on Gordon Street and south on Topeka Boulevard.

Traffic coming from north Topeka will be able to cross the Kansas River bridge and access the on-ramp to westbound I-70.

The eastbound I-70 exit ramp to south Topeka Boulevard will remain open.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting and subject to change.
