Weekend road closures scheduled in Topeka for Polk-Quincy Viaduct project work

Post Date:01/15/2026 9:28 AM

Portions of westbound I-70 and Topeka Boulevard in Topeka are scheduled to close this weekend, as part of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Polk-Quincy Viaduct project.

Conditions permitting, the following areas will be closed from approximately 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, until work is complete on Sunday, Jan. 18:

  • Westbound I-70 between 10th Avenue and MacVicar Avenue
  • The 1st Street on-ramp to westbound I-70
  • Topeka Boulevard between S.W. 3rd Street and N.W. Gordon Street, including the Kansas River bridge

During the closures, motorists can utilize the following detours or alternate routes that are not marked:

  • Westbound I-70 through traffic can follow signed detours south to I-470, or north to K-4 to U.S. 24 to U.S. 75. Drivers can also use the local street detour: 10th Avenue to Topeka Boulevard to 6th Avenue to MacVicar Avenue to westbound I-70.
  • To access westbound I-70 from north Topeka, motorists can use the local street detour: N.W. Morse Street to N.E. Quincy Street/Kansas Avenue to 6th Avenue to MacVicar Avenue to westbound I-70.

Additional I-70 closures may occur if more work is needed on the viaduct. If necessary, KDOT will coordinate with the City of Topeka to schedule the closure and provide information when available.

Both directions of I-70 will stay reduced to one lane until construction of the viaduct’s replacement is complete. More information about the Polk-Quincy Viaduct project can be found at ksdot.gov/I-70-Polk-Quincy.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews
