Overnight work, ramp changes expected on Polk-Quincy Viaduct project in Topeka

Post Date:10/06/2025 3:06 PM

Overnight work and ramp changes are expected to begin this week on the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Polk-Quincy Viaduct project on I-70 in Topeka.

Starting the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 8, paving operations will occur during overnight hours along eastbound I-70 between MacVicar Avenue and Topeka Boulevard. Crews will work from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weeknights for approximately two weeks. Impacts to traffic are not expected while overnight work is taking place, and regular daytime working hours will continue.

Ramp Changes:
• On Monday, Oct. 13, the eastbound I-70 exit ramp to 3rd Street/Monroe Street will close for reconstruction.
       - The eastbound I-70 exits at 8th Avenue and Adams Street/Branner Trafficway will remain open to access downtown Topeka and the surrounding area. Eastbound motorists can also exit at MacVicar Avenue and go east on 6th Avenue to access the area.

• The eastbound I-70 exit that previously connected to 1st Street is expected to open in mid-November.
       - The new exit ramp will connect directly to Topeka Boulevard. Upon opening, traffic exiting eastbound I-70 will temporarily be restricted to one southbound lane on Topeka Boulevard. More information will be provided prior to the change.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting and subject to change.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit NewsReleases/NortheastKansas
