Westbound I-670 to westbound Central Avenue exit ramp temporarily closed for project work in Wyandotte County
Kansas Department of Transportation maintenance on the Central Avenue bridge over I-70 and Union Pacific Railroad requires closing the westbound I-670 to westbound Central Avenue exit ramp, starting Wednesday, July 9, in Wyandotte County. Detours are marked.
Left turns from eastbound Central Avenue to access the eastbound I-70 entrance ramp will not be allowed. Access from westbound Central Avenue to the eastbound I-70 entrance ramp will remain open. Central Avenue, from 6th Street to 4th Street, will have a single lane closed in each direction.
These closures and detours will last approximately three weeks. Message boards and signs are in place to alert motorists..
Detour routes:
- Eastbound Central Avenue to eastbound I-70: Use the westbound I-70 entrance ramp, and then travel west to use the southbound U.S. 69 (18th Street) exit. Turn right onto U.S. 69 (18th Street) and travel south to use the eastbound I-70 entrance ramp.
- Westbound I-670 to westbound Central Avenue: Continue west on I-670 to the westbound I-70 ramp. Continue west to the U.S. 69 (18th Street) exit. Turn right onto southbound U.S. 69 (18th Street), then head south to the eastbound I-70 entrance ramp. Continue east to the Central Avenue exit ramp.
These maintenance repairs are part of tied projects on the eastbound and westbound I-670 bridges over the Kansas River and Union Pacific Railroad, and the Central Avenue bridge over I-70 and Union Pacific Railroad. The projects include girder work, expansion joint replacement and bridge deck patching. These projects share traffic control and are expected to be completed in late September.
Work is scheduled during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday. Traffic control will involve lane and ramp closures, changeable message boards, signs, traffic cones and barricades.
Clarkson Construction, of Kansas City, Missouri, is the contractor for the tied projects with a total cost of $9.3 million.
KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit NewsReleases/District1-NortheastKansas.
