Bridge work will close westbound I-670 segment for two weeks starting July 7

Post Date:07/03/2025 10:31 AM

Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) bridge repairs will close a bi-state stretch of westbound I-670 over the Kansas River bridge for about two weeks, starting at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 7, conditions permitting.

The closure will extend from Genessee Street in Kansas City, Missouri, to Mill Street in Kansas City, Kansas, and includes the Genessee Street/Wyoming Street on-ramp to westbound I-670.

These closures and detours will be in place for approximately 15 days.

Traffic will be detoured as follows:

  • Northbound I-35: Use the westbound I-70 exit to the westbound I-70/I-670 merge point.

  • Westbound I-670: Use the northbound I-35 exit, then use the westbound I-70 exit to the westbound I-70/I-670 merge.

  • Northbound U.S. 71: Use the westbound I-70 exit to the westbound I-70/I-670 merge.

  • Southbound U.S. 71/I-35/I-29: Use the westbound I-70 exit to the westbound I-70/I-670 merge.

  • Westbound I-70: Continue west to the I-70/I-670 merge.

This closure is part of the tied bridge repair projects that include work on both directions of I-670 over the Kansas River and Union Pacific Railroad, and the Central Avenue bridge over I-70. Repairs include girder work, expansion joint replacement and bridge deck patching. These projects share traffic control and are expected to be completed in late September.

Message boards and signs have been placed in the area to alert motorists of the upcoming westbound I-670 closures. Work is scheduled during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday. Traffic will be controlled using lane and ramp closures, changeable message boards, signs, traffic cones and barricades.

Clarkson Construction, of Kansas City, Missouri, is the contractor for both projects with a total cost of $9.3 million.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit NewsReleases/District1-NortheastKansas.
